Social Networks Go Niche

July 30, 2007 – 5:44 pm

Social network sites are going niche with new sporting social network sites launched.  MyColts.net, a social networking Web site, like MySpace, geared toward Colts fans launched last month and has grown to include about 5,200 users.  Other professional sports franchises, like the Denver Broncos of the NFL and the Portland Trail Blazers of the NBA, have launched social networking Web sites.

”Dan Harbison, director of Internet marketing and media for the Trail Blazers and creator of the team’s social networking Web site, doesn’t think the shift to niche is a fad.  I think that’s where social networking is going,” he said. “I think that’s the problem with Facebook and MySpace — they are everything to everybody.”  ith a specialized online social network, all users automatically know they have an instant connection with every member of the group.”

By going niche in social networks users are connecting with like minded people who probably have a higher age profile than MySpace or Bebo users.  This allows advertisers to target communities relevant to their brands.
